The Elevator Experience

I was in Japan, standing in front of three elevators.

When I pressed the button, a small light turned on next to one of them. It was a simple signal, but immediately clear: this is the elevator you're going to take.

So instead of waiting in place and watching all three, I naturally walked toward that one.

Then, right before it arrived, the same light started blinking. A subtle sound accompanied it. It felt like the elevator was gently saying, I'm here, get ready.

I loved how little effort it took to understand what was happening. The experience guided me with almost no words. No confusion, no second guessing, no unnecessary mental load.

That is what great design often feels like to me: not loud or dramatic, just quietly clear at exactly the right moment.
